The amount of seniors that are using the Internet and social media websites is increasing. And it doesn’t just end at the Internet use. With the amount of cell phones, tablets, and applications available, the use of technology is on the rise in the 65 plus age range. Seniors can benefit in several ways from the use of technology.
Social Media
Sites such as Facebook give seniors connection to their family member and friends. They can send messages, see photographs, and chat with the ones they love and care about. This will help them to stay connected and feel included in their loved ones lives.
Email is one of the highest uses of technology for seniors; it is easy to set up and is not as complex a process as compared to creating profiles and explaining social media sites. Email is also another way for seniors to engage in conversations with their loved ones.
Skype
Skype allows users to video chat with each other from any location with Internet access, making it easier than ever for grandparents to see their grandchildren via a computer screen. The ability to connect with family in different areas allows for a sense of socialization and the ability to learn new technological skills.
Safety
Seniors living alone should have a personal emergency response system that allows them to get help with just the push of a button. These are great tools to keep caregivers minds at ease as well.
Exercise
Video games can get seniors’ bodies and minds moving. Games on devices such as the Nintendo Wii offer a fun opportunity for seniors to engage in light physical activity.
Medication Management
Many seniors find it difficult to keep track of their medications as older adults are taking multiple prescriptions drugs regularly. Pill boxes can help, but technological solutions can provide reminder alerts that it is time to refill or take medication.
Overall, technology is great for seniors as it allow them to be more social and active, to stay connected, and to hopefully prolong their quality of life.
