At Cozy Retire, the comfort of our guests is our top priority. Our assisted living facilities and services are designed with individual care in mind, and tailored directly to the needs of your or your loved ones.
Activity and exercise are big parts of our program for our residents who are able to participate. Exercise holds many of the benefits most are already aware of for seniors: Heart health, bone strength, improved flexibility and better appearance. However, there are several tangential benefits that fewer people know about. Let’s look at these hidden benefits of exercise for seniors.
Mental Capacity
Many different pieces of research have specifically linked physical activity with slower levels of mental decline. Our memory care facility at Cozy Retire is based on this theme. Exercise helps promote blood flow all over the body, including to the brain – the oxygen in the blood that’s flowing more adequately can promote cell growth in the brain.
Exercise has been proven as a legitimate combatant to both dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Even just brief bits per day, such as a walk or a low-impact hike, can go a huge distance to preventing some of the most common mental capacity diminishments we often see in seniors.
Disease Prevention
By the same token, exercise has also been linked with higher levels of immune function and greater ability to fight off disease. Because immune systems naturally become weaker as we age, this can be very important for some people. Exercise has been shown to provide a positive effect on conditions including diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke and many others. It has helped reduce overall death rates, and rates of hospitalization.
Healing Improvements
As we get older, it takes longer and longer for injuries or any wounds to heal. Regular exercise has shown the ability to increase healing recovery processes by as much as 25 percent, which can be a huge boon to pain relief and other vital day-to-day issues for seniors.
